The Lift A Sista Up team (LASU) consists of a group of female, high-school seniors who believe that women deserve equal opportunities and a space where women can empower one another and explore their involvement in their community. According to our mission statement:
We understand that females are clearly disadvantaged in today’s society in numerous ways. As females, we have to combat multiple barriers such as the wage gap, the glass ceiling, rape culture, and body image. Today, women only earn 78% of what men earn for the doing the same job. Even though more women are reaching higher, elite levels, there is still a huge disparity in earnings of men and women at the very top. We want to educate both our male and female peers about these issues and how they affect our whole society.
Another aspect of Lift A Sista Up is leading workshops at different youth organizations around San Francisco. Our workshops will aim to serve both young women and young men. The workshops will introduce concepts related to sexism (glass ceiling, wage gap), feminism, and provide tips and tools for promoting gender equality. We are all part of a college prep organization and we also will discuss the importance of education and college in addressing barriers for women and all people.
Through our scholarship we will promote and honor young women who are lifting up other women to promote female empowerment. Women that can persevere through a society that's constantly banging down on them is inspirational to themselves and other women and serve as a realization to men and others around them. By obtaining an education, women can create that impact.
